Would you like to write more fluently in French?
Are you still too afraid to engage in oral conversations?
Do you want your ideas to come more quickly and naturally in French?
Would you like to receive personalized feedback?
Can’t find content on topics that interest you?
You want to put the grammar and vocabulary you’ve learned into practice?

“Chat en français !”, French private messaging sessions, is what you need.

As usual, there is an original French version of this page, which I recommend you try reading first. This service requires at least a basic understanding of written French.

With this service, say goodbye to outdated French, deja-vu topics that are used in every textbook out there, school-mandated programs that don’t prepare you for real-life conversations, and studying grammar rules by heart, just to forget them a few days later: we put your knowledge in practice around conversations that are interesting to you, and we have fun speaking a natural, modern French.

“Chat en français !”: what is it concretely?

You engage in written direct messaging conversations in French only with a human native speaker (yep, that’s me!).

For 50 minutes, we discuss naturally and without interruption about things you actually want to talk about. Thanks to those genuine conversations, my goal is to help you have fluent and natural conversations with other French speaking people.

How can chat sessions in French help you improve?

With live written conversations, you practice reacting quickly and spontaneously in French: this will help you gradually think directly in French (instead of translating from your native language) and construct sentences more easily.

You practice reading modern, natural French about topics that you have interest in.

Little by little, you get more confident in your ability to express yourself in French. This can also boost your skills and confidence for oral discussions!

You get support from a real person, also offering follow-up and personalised advice.

You memorize vocabulary and grammar rules thanks to a concrete context where you had to use them, instead of studying by heart.

You can re-read your previous discussions as often as you want. Words fly away, writings remain. (In French, we say “Les paroles s’envolent, les écrits restent.”)

By expressing your ideas in a written conversation, you develop precision in how you express yourself in French, you improve your sentences construction and you can work on the details.

Practicing live, written discussion in French will help you formulate sentences more easily and quickly, which in turn will also be useful for oral conversations!

Why should you work with me?

A close relationship and a shared investment

I limit the number of students I work with so that I can develop a genuine relationship with them. It’s important to be able to talk naturally about things that interest us so that chat sessions don’t feel like a chore. You’ll learn best when you’re having a good time!

By developing a lasting relationship, we can move on from same old basic conversations (introducing yourself, describing your family, talking about your studies, etc.) to richer and more diverse conversations, just like those you would have with your friends or family in your native language.

For those sessions to be smooth, I want to work with students who have enough interests in common with me, and who also want to develop a close relationship with their tutor.

You can learn a bit more about me by reading this introduction page (in French), and you’ll find a list of things I’m interested in a few paragraphs below.

A genuine passion and long-time experience in writing

In 16 years of professional experience, I had numerous opportunities to write technical and non-technical documents in various forms and for different purposes. I’ve communicated in writing with tons of people, both in a colloquial or professional way.

But my passion for writing started way before my career, in elementary school, when I was writing my first fictional stories, or gathering information to write my own nonfiction “books” about my favorite topics. Since then, I wrote several novels and short stories, like Big Universe, my French science-fiction novel published by an editor.

I’ve also been blogging for almost 20 years, writing about concrete, day-to-day topics. My main blog is about themes like consumption, minimalism, waste reduction, organisation, budgeting, work, travel… and I’ve written a few ebooks on those topics.

My interest for language learning and knowledge sharing

I started the project “Lis et écris en français !” because I love learning languages as much as I love sharing knowledge. I started learning Japanese by myself a few years ago, and that’s how I discovered the “comprehensible input” technique and the “language acquisition” theories, and applied them to my own learning.

I know the barriers language learners face, because I’ve been there.

Thanks to my professional experience in a technical field, I also developed a passion for knowledge sharing. I’ve always loved explaining what I know to people who need to learn it, and this professional experience provided me with tools and techniques to do it better.

The topics we can talk about during our conversations in French

When you book a session, you get the opportunity to propose a few topics of conversation, but if absolutely none of the ones listed below seems of interest to you, I’m probably not the best person to chat with.

Working with those topics allows us to go beyond basic discussions (introducing yourself, talking about your education, presenting your family…) and chat about things that interest you and that you’ll be able to talk about with other French speakers.

Topics are listed in French, as this program requires at least a basic conversational level.

  • XP = topics I have a lot of interest and/or experience in and about which I could talk for hours
  • Î = topics I’m really interested in and can easily talk about in a conversation
  • QQUES = topics I know a bit about and have some interest in, but I bet you know more than me

How does it work concretely?

  1. You book a slot in my agenda.
  2. You answer a few questions to help me check your level, tell me why you’re motivated by this program, what you’d like to talk about…
💡You have the opportunity to let me know things like: what tone should we adopt during our conversations, do we chat like friends or colleagues…
  3. I check that your level is sufficient to have conversations, that the topics you proposed allow me to chat easily, that the chat platform* you chose is relevant… If everything’s ok, I send you the information to receive your payment in advance.
  4. At the time of our meeting, we start discussing for 50 minutes straight. We chat in FRENCH ONLY, without any intermediary language. If you don’t know a word, I expect you to try to explain it in another way, and I will do the same if you don’t get something I wrote.
  5. If you chose a session with feedback, you receive advice and corrections to help you communicate more naturally and precisely within 48 hours.

🤔 Why do I ask that we select topics in advance?

This way, you can prepare the session and feel more confident: you have the opportunity to search a few words, think about things you’d like to talk about…

It also gives us fuel for conversation, so we don’t get stuck: I want you to take advantage of the session to the fullest.

*Direct messaging platforms: I highly recommend the use of Discord, but if that’s not feasible for you, you can propose other solutions (like Instagram DM for example).
